Wadsleyite Spectra (Visible and Infrared)

Wadsleyite is a mineral found on Earth in some meteorites. It is believed to be abundant at depth in the planet where it exists under high pressure. The data presented below are from synthetic material synthesized under high pressure and temperature conditions. Its hydrogen content is of interest because of the possiblity that this phase can store significant amounts of the element hydrogen at depth in the mantle of planet Earth.

Wadsleyite 2 is new synthetic hydrous silicate phase related to wadsleyite which can contain even larger amounts of hydrogen. Reference: Smyth & Kawamoto, Earth & Planetary Sci Let (1997). It has a dark green color from its Fe2+ content.
