We drove out of the heavily forested Carajas region to the boundary of the state park. From that point on, the forest had been removed and converted to cattle ranches. We stayed the night in the city of Parauapebas at a pleasant hotel replete with a variety of parrots and fruit trees. The city consists mostly of small shops and residences. There we saw one of our best examples of a banded iron formation as a rock by the driveway. The next morning, we continued into Marabá. The city is built on the side of a major river. There, our group had to split into two groups. One flew via Belem to Fortaleza, while the other went by way of Brasilia to Fortaleza.
