Flora & Fauna

A flower growing on the floor of the jungle near Carajas

In the flooded Amazon jungle, we had a chance to see faculty at play with snakes and caimam, and piranha and other fish. We also saw students at play with snakes and monkeys, and sloths

We enjoyed the sight of manioc plants and the taste of manioc dishes. Coconut trees and papaya trees provided excellent fruit for meals.

The beauty of flowers was in the cities, and in the jungles and forests, we saw plants with thorns, and flowers dropping from the jungle canopy.

In our hotel at Icapui, we had frogs on the stearing wheel and frogs in the toilet. In and around Manaus, scarlet macaws we seen in the air and trees.

And did we say we say coconut palms?

And let us not forget the ants, butterflies, and monkeys of the jungles, and the monkeys and other animals we only saw in the Carajas zoo.

Also, don't forget the ant nests or the giant ants in the Carajas jungle and the unfortunate student they bit! Or the many stick insects and dragon flys in the jungle. Even the pesky flys in the jungle had their own beauty.

Some animals tried to hide from us such as this crab on the beach, while others such as the vultures were our constant companions.

Domestic animals such as cows and donkeys were often seen. Other animals were seen at work at tasks such as pulling carts.

We went from the shadowed jungle of the Amazon Forest near Carajas, to the nearby islands of scruby savanah of the iron-oxide soils. We went from the lone Brazil nut trees on the deforsted jungle to the arid eastern landscapes. And we saw the flora in the eastern beaches to the dimly-lit rain forests in Rio de Janerio.
